Serving Chattanooga, Cleveland, Red Bank, Hixson, TN
If you are shopping for a new full-size pick-up, it helps to know more about leading brands. The RAM 1500 and Ford F-150 have been two dominate models for years. The RAM 1500 has won Motor’s Trend Truck of the Year Award for two consecutive years, both 2014 and 2015. Since then, it continues to get better.
Performance
While both the RAM 1500 and the Ford F-150 come equipped with a range of engines, only the RAM 1500 offers a diesel option. Earning 28 mpg highway*, the RAM Ecodiesel stands alone in the full-size pick-up class. This fuel economy is also matched with performance. The turbocharged Ecodiesel kicks out 420 lb.ft. of torque. That power comes in handy when hauling a heavy load. Other RAM engines offer improved fuel economy thanks to the use of RAM’s exclusive 8-speed automatic transmission. With two more gears to choose from, the RAM TorqueFlite transmission can make better use of power, while the Ford F-150 is only equipped with a six-speed transmission. Other RAM advantages include a 3.6L Pentastar V6 that churns out 305 horsepower while a 5.7-liter Hemi V8 is rated at 395 horsepower, and utilizes cylinder deactivation to improve fuel economy. In contrast, the F-150 is available with a 3.5L V6 with 282 horsepower or 5.0L V8 that produces 385 horsepower.
Handling
One important thing to consider in a full-sized pickup is suspension and handling. RAM and Ford can handle big payloads in their sturdy beds, but only RAM offers a four corner air-leveling suspension to manage distribution. This system can raise or lower each corner to balance the load’s weight. It can readjust automatically if the load shifts. The better weight distribution ensures better, safer handling. Drivers can take charge and raise the bed to gain ground clearance as the terrain changes. The same feature lets the driver lower the bed to allow for easier loading or unloading the RAM 1500. On the highway, the air suspension can lower the empty bed for improve aerodynamics, making the RAM 1500 more fuel efficient. On the other hand, Edmunds has noted that the F-150’s stiff bed creates a stiff ride when the bed is empty.
Reviews
Edmunds rewarded the entire RAM 1500 family with it’s “A” rating. Reviews have found the RAM cabin offers a higher quality of material in construction. This is most noticeable at the entry level trims of the RAM 1500. It continues up the chain of 14 different trims, in contrast, the F-150 has 6 major trim levels. With so many different trim combinations, it’s easy to configure the RAM 1500 to suite your exact needs. Edmunds writes that this is the truck that a person can drive comfortably all day. Since many of consumers use full-sized trucks for work, that’s an important reason to consider the RAM 1500. Edmunds calls it extremely desirable for work, play or family road trips.
