2016 Jeep Renegade vs Patriot

Serving Chattanooga, Cleveland, Red Bank, Hixson, TN

With crossovers and other similar city-friendly SUVs gaining dominance in the auto market, Jeep was bound to provide at least one addition to this arena. With the Renegade and Patriot, they've provided two entries. With a shorter body, less cargo capacity, and smaller, lighter engine, the Renegade is aimed towards urban terrain. As the older of the two, the Patriot supplies a larger carrying volume with a powertrain that's better adapted to an unpaved environment. For 2016, both vehicles retain the recognizable jeep profile while exhibiting their own distinct characteristics.

Performance

Both Jeeps rely on a pair of 4-cylinder engines to get the job done. The Renegade starts with a turbocharged 1.4 liter 160 horsepower motor. Connected to a six-speed manual transmission, it produces 24 mpg in town and 31 mpg on the open road*. Amazingly, it's able to achieve the same mileage whether employing two-wheel or four-wheel drive. In keeping with the focus on gas savings, the larger 2.4 liter 180 horsepower engine used in the Renegade's Limited and Trailhawk editions still offers mileage of 22 mpg city and 31 mpg highway* by the inclusion of a nine-speed automatic transmission. When combined with four-wheel drive, mileage dips to 21 mpg city and 29 mpg highway*. The Jeep Patriot mainly utilizes either a 2 liter 158 horsepower engine coupled with a five-speed manual transmission or a 2.4 liter 172 horsepower engine paired with a six-speed automatic. With this arrangement, the 2 liter motor delivers 23 mpg city and 30 mpg highway*. All 2.4 liter engines include four-wheel drive and give 20 mpg city and 26 mpg highway*. The Patriot stands apart by also combining the 2 liter engine with an automatic continuously variable transmission that provides 22 mpg city and 26 mpg highway*.

Appearance

A compact silhouette of nearly 14 feet separates the Renegade from the 14 and a half foot Patriot. This difference in length gives the Patriot 23 cubic feet of storage that exceeds the Renegade's smaller 18.5 cubic foot space. With rear seats folded down, 63.4 cubic feet and 50.8 cubic feet space opens up respectively. As the more off-road oriented of the two, the Patriot has just over 8 inches of clearance while most Renegade models have 6.7 inches. The Renegade also maintains a wider stance of over 6'2” that lets it grip urban streets while the Patriot has a narrower profile of just over 5'9” for slipping through restricted wilderness trails. Both Jeeps come in a wide spectrum of colors like Deep Cherry Red, Eco Green, or Mojave Sand.

Safety

Along with solid construction, both vehicles come with front and side airbags, antilock brakes, traction and stability control, and tire pressure monitoring. There's also the option of a rearview camera. As a more modern design, depending on the package, the Renegade can include blind spot monitoring, and frontal collision, lane departure, and rear cross-traffic alerts.

Both vehicles possess the Jeep family resemblance, but they also have their own separate identities. With more room, the Patriot feels at home in the wild while the efficient Renegade take to city streets quite nicely.
