Which SUV is better - Dodge Durango or Ford Explorer?
As full-size SUVs, the 2016 Dodge Durango and Ford Explorer are family-friendly vehicles with high-end amenities. Although the Ford Explorer offers three engine options, the Dodge Durango still delivers better performance when equipped with the signature eight-cylinder HEMI engine. This Dodge SUV also has superior digital technology such as the UConnect infotainment system and rear entertainment system with two monitors.
Powertrain
Capable of generating a maximum of 295 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque, the 3.6 L Pentastar engine in the 2016 Dodge Durango outmatches the 2016 Ford Explorer's 3.5 L V6 engine that is rated at 290 hp and 255 lb-ft of torque. This Dodge SUV can also run on the 5.7 L HEMI V8 engine that whips out up to 360 horsepower and 390 pound-feet of torque. Running on Fuel Saver Technology, this eight-cylinder engine offers better overall performance than the Explorer's comparable 3.5 L EcoBoost V6 engine that delivers 365 hp and 350 lb-ft of peak torque. Both of these heavy-duty SUVs offer All Wheel Drive for reliable traction on different terrains. Thanks to All-Speed Traction Control and Electronic Roll Mitigation, the Dodge Durango delivers better handling than the Ford Explorer. Additionally, an eight-speed automatic transmission with a rotary E-Shift dial makes it easy to precisely handle the Durango. By contrast, the Explorer has an automatic transmission with only six gear speeds.
Technology
Featuring an 8.4-inch touchscreen monitor, the UConnect infotainment system in the 2016 Dodge Durango provides more options than the eight-inch SYNC system in the Ford Explorer. The UConnect navigation system delivers reliable directions including colored 3D maps. The UConnect Access Via Mobile provides seamless access to popular apps such as Pandora, iHeart Radio, Slacker, Aha and more. Integrated into UConnect, SiriusXM Satellite Traffic and Travel Link also deliver updates on traffic and weather conditions. The Dodge Durango has an optional Dual-Screen Blu-ray and DVD Entertainment System, which comes with two nine-inch monitors that are installed in the back of headrests of the front seats. The Ford Explorer does not offer a rear entertainment system. Both SUVs are compatible with SiriusXM Satellite Radio, but the Dodge Durango simply delivers better acoustics through the BeatsAudio sound system that includes nine speakers. This Dodge also includes a media hub with an SD card slot, auxiliary input and USB ports.
Safety
The 2016 Dodge Durango is available with the Forward Collision Warning with Active Braking, which matches the Forward Collision Warning with Brake Support in the 2016 Ford Explorer. Both SUVs also have Adaptive Cruise Control that is programmed to react to movements of other vehicles ahead on the road. When it comes to providing some assistance for backing up, the Dodge Durango clearly offers better capabilities. The ParkSense Rear Park Assist System is likely to reduce rear collisions when this Dodge is driven in reverse mode. Some other features that are available in this Dodge SUV but not in the Ford Explorer include the rain-sensing windshield wipers. In case of an accident or other trouble on the road, occupants in the Durango can call for help through the UConnect Access portal that includes Emergency Assistance and Roadside Assistance.
