The Grand Cherokee looks every bit the modern luxury sport automobile, with signature Jeep style and a modern mean streak. While the Highlander has undergone a recent upgrade, the materials and the layout have not yet been able to impress auto industry critics as much as the Grand Cherokee's forward-thinking aesthetic. Both vehicles are designed with families in mind, so safety has to be a key factor. Both Highlander and Grand Cherokee received top safety ratings, but the Grand Cherokee is equipped with Hill Ascent Control technology - something you don't get as part of Highlander's standard feature package. 

Power and Performance

The Grand Cherokee starts out with a bigger motor than the Highlander, so you'll get more torque and more horsepower right off the line. The 4-cylinder motor in the base-level Highlander has received lackluster reviews from automotive critics, who recommend upgrading to a bigger engine. Even the base Grand Cherokee comes with a predatory Pentastar V6 that can tow up to 6,500 pounds without any upgrades. The Highlander can only tow 1,500. Even in its most fully-equipped incarnation, the Toyota Highlander can only tow up to 5,000 pounds - so if you're looking to pull something, the Grand Cherokee is the clear choice.

Utility and Reliability

The thing about the Jeep Grand Cherokee is that, for all its cushy comforts and upscale design features, it's still a Jeep. Today's Grand Cherokee is every bit the trail-capable beast of yesteryear. If you enjoy getting out into nature, the Grand Cherokee can get you there and back without breaking a sweat - or anything else. Both vehicles are available with four-wheel drive, but that's where Highlander's venture into ruggedness ends. With its smaller wheelbase and wider turning radius, the Highlander is far from trail-ready. Furthermore, the Grand Cherokee offers a number of upgrade packages that further enhance its off road capabilities including air suspension and a locking rear differential. Nothing like this is available for the Toyota Highlander at any trim level.
